A Question of Fit, Not Ranking
One of the most common questions we receive from Singapore employers is: "Should I hire a Myanmar or an Indian helper?" It's a fair question, but the honest answer is that there is no universal right answer — only the right fit for your specific household.
Both Myanmar and Indian domestic helpers have served Singapore families with distinction for decades. The differences between them are not about quality or reliability — they are about background, strengths, and cultural compatibility that will matter in your home.
This article compares both fairly, based on the common characteristics we observe across many placements. Every individual helper is different, and these are generalisations, not rules.
English Proficiency
Indian helpers tend to have a stronger baseline in English, particularly those from southern states like Kerala, Tamil Nadu, and Karnataka. English is widely used in Indian schools and professional environments, so many Indian helpers are comfortable with conversational and instructional English from day one.
Myanmar helpers typically have more variable English proficiency. Those from urban areas or who have completed higher secondary education often have functional English. Rural helpers may need a short adjustment period. That said, Myanmar helpers who have previously worked in Singapore are often highly proficient, having learned on the job.
Practical consideration: If your household communicates primarily in English, or if you have elderly family members who rely heavily on verbal instruction, an Indian helper may settle in faster.
Cooking
Indian helpers are generally well-versed in a wide variety of cuisines, including South Indian vegetarian cooking, North Indian dishes, Chinese-style stir-fries (widely taught in helper training programmes), and Western basics. Many come with specific dietary knowledge relevant to Indian-Singaporean households.
Myanmar helpers traditionally cook Myanmar cuisine at home but adapt quickly to Singaporean preferences. Many have gone through structured pre-departure training that includes basic Chinese and Western cooking. Myanmar helpers placed in Chinese-speaking households often excel within a few months.
Practical consideration: If you have specific dietary requirements — particularly South Asian vegetarian cooking — Indian helpers may be the more natural fit. For general household cooking, both adapt well.
Care Experience
Both nationalities are well represented in infant care, child care, and eldercare placements. However, we do observe some patterns:
- Myanmar helpers placed in infant and eldercare roles often develop strong emotional bonds with their charges. They are frequently noted by employers for their patience and gentleness.
- Indian helpers often bring formal training in nursing care, particularly those from Kerala where healthcare worker training is common. For medical or complex eldercare needs, an Indian helper with nursing background can be invaluable.
Cultural Compatibility
Indian helpers will generally find it easier to integrate into Indian-Singaporean households due to shared cultural references, food habits, and religious practices. Many are Christian or Hindu, which may be relevant for some families.
Myanmar helpers are predominantly Buddhist, which may be a compatibility factor for Buddhist households. They typically have a calm, non-confrontational communication style that many employers find easy to manage.
Practical Considerations: Levy and Cost
Both Indian and Myanmar helpers are subject to the same MOM Foreign Domestic Worker levy structure. Salary expectations are broadly similar, though experienced helpers in either category typically command higher wages. Our fee schedule provides the current placement fee ranges by nationality.
The Importance of the Individual
Every generalisation in this article has exceptions. We have placed Indian helpers who became exceptional Buddhist-household fits, and Myanmar helpers who became skilled Indian vegetarian cooks. Character, work ethic, and adaptability are traits of the individual — not the nationality.
The most important step is to review individual profiles carefully and, where possible, have a brief video call with prospective helpers before making a decision. Our consultants can facilitate this.
